Do You Know Enough About Pet Health Care?

We’re a nation of animal lovers and pets are like part of the family. This is why pet health care is more important than ever. Visiting the vet can be expensive, but knowing the basics to keep your companion healthy may help by reducing the need for medication and surgery in later life.

Larger pets such as cats and dogs must be vaccinated by a vet when they are young. This can be expensive, but shouldn’t be forgotten. In the long run though, vaccination saves money by protecting against life threatening conditions.

Similarly, cats and dogs must be wormed and treated for fleas and ticks. Again, this may seem expensive but it’s better to be safe than sorry and it’ll ensure your pet is happy.

A major part of pet health care is making sure your pet is happy and comfortable. All animals need a suitable place to sleep. Cats might sleep in a variety of different places in the house. But dogs should have a warm bed. Also, smaller pets like hamsters and rabbits need a warm place with the appropriate material. You can buy hamster bedding at pet shops, but they’re just as happy with shredded paper.

Your pet’s health is also dictated by their diet. It sounds like a joke, but pet obesity is on the increase in the UK, so choose their food carefully. Fatty milk isn’t great for cats, so save it for treats only. Many dog owners feed their dog human food from the table. A little human food is ok, but always remember your dog has his own food too, so shouldn’t be eating too much of yours. Fresh vegetables are a favourite of rabbits, and varying their diet will do them good.

Exercise is very important for pets. Even small hamsters need to be able to run about, so you should give them the biggest cage you can. Hamsters should be taken out of their cage to exercise; the plastic balls you can buy in pet shops are great for them. Watch out though, as hamsters are great escape artists. Although cats will get their own exercise, they love to stay active with toys at home. When it’s cold outside, some cats are reluctant to go out, even though you feel sorry for your cat, a gentle push in the right direction is good for them. Dogs love a good walk, so it’s no problem to give them the exercise they need. Giving your dog the right amount of exercise is vital. A general rule of thumb is the bigger the dog the longer his walk should be, but vets can advise on this.

These are very simple considerations which are very effective in giving your pet a healthy lifestyle. Pets should always see a vet once a year for a check up, but making sure your animal’s life is as healthy as it can be will aid your pet health care regime. To prevent heartache and costly vets bills, this advice is vital.
